PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE FOR FIRST AID


Definition

First aid is the immediate treatment given to a victim of an accident or sudden illness. It should be continued until the arrival of a doctor or professional medical care can be obtained if needed.

First Aid  Objectives

To Save life
  • ·         Control severe bleeding.
  • ·         Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.


To Prevent Complication
  • ·         Immobilize a fracture.
  • ·         Cover wounds to prevent infection.


To Promote Recovery
  • ·         Make the victim comfortable.
  • ·         Reassure the victim.


Administering of Medication

The following rules should be observed:

You are only authorized to give medication carried in the Daily First Aid Kit provided. Do not offer your own medication.

Prior to giving medication, ask patient if she or he is allergic to the medication. Brief on side effects of precautions to adhere to, if any. Do not give any medication to a pregnant woman.

Always bring the medication bottle to the patient so that they can see what medication they are taking.
Provide a glass of warm water and place the medication in the patient’s hand, and wait until the medication has been taken.

Do not place any medication in a patient’s mouth or to an unconscious patient.
